Henry Ford Essay

Henry Ford made many contributions to the American economy during the 1920’s. He was a very skilled and intelligent man at that. Henry was born into an Irish immigrant family on a farm in Wayne County, Michigan. He became Chief engineer of the Edison Company in Detroit during 1888. In 199 he organized that Detroit auto mobile and in 1903 he introduced the ford motor company model T manufactured in 1908. He was believed to sponsor the development of the moving assembly line in 1914. Henry Ford made a major contribution to American society with several things such as the car industry, assembly line, and the way he treated his workers. After several trial of building cars and companies in 1903, Henry established the Ford motor company and introduced the Model T in 1908. During Henrys explosion of success he said â€Å"There are two ways of making money- one at the expense of other, the other by service to one another† (Burg 39). This quote by Henry showed that henry didn’t care about just making money, he cared about giving the people what they wanted then making money of the idea of that. Growing up and understanding the ways of life, I have come to the conclusion that you get absolutely nowhere in life without having a set career that you will love and enjoy. I have come to like various types of careers that I will enjoy and that I am good at as of right now. I would like to start off by telling you all of the careers I would like to acquire. Since I’m good at talking to people and helping them, I have chosen my first choice as a psychiatrist. I, also, love animals and would love to become a veterinarian. Because I want to make a difference and help others, I would like to become a surgeon. I will start off by telling you about each description with various information. I would love to become a psychiatrist. They have everything there is to offer if you shared the same interests as me. They analyze a patient’s medical history from the beginning, their medical allergies, physical condition, and examination results to make sure the patient is to have the most proper attention. They examine patients to obtain information on medical conditions. Most importantly they diagnose their patients with the correct diagnose. The counsel patients and analyze their mental disorder to discuss with psychologists, social workers, psychiatric nurses and other professionals. The education to become a psychiatrists it is requires to graduate college, get your master’s degree, Ph.D., M.D,, or J.D. The most a psychiatrist will make in a year would be up to a median of $180,000. This occupation employee on an average of 1,700 people in Pennsylvania. From all of the information I shared with you from above, becoming a psychiatrist is definitely number one on my list. What is a veterinarian? A Veterinarian is a doctor who diagnoses and treats diseases and dysfunctions of an animal. They research develop certain things of the animals. They could inspect livestock. Veterinarians exam and determine that diseases or injuries of the animal. Provide care to a wide verity of animals such a horses or exotic birds. They also educate the public about diseases that can be spread from animals to humans. Being a veterinarian seems like a tough job. From having to attend tons of meetings, lectures, conferences, and still having to continue education courses. To becom e a veterinarian you must graduate college, get your master’s degree, Ph.D., M.D., or J.D. you would making between $55,820 and $148,290 a year. In 2008, this occupation employed at least 2,700 people in Pennsylvania. To become a veterinarian would be so wonderful just because I love and care about animals so much. Helping a person is the most important thing a person can do. I don’t know about anyone else but when I help someone it makes me feel so much better about myself just because I know that person is happy because I helped them. That’s why I chose to become a surgeon. There are so many pros to becoming a surgeon. I would say the only consequence on becoming a surgeon would have to be having someone die while they’re in surgery. A surgeon treats diseases, helps the injured and most importantly keeps a person living. They always analyze a patient’s medical history, medication allergies, physical condition, and exam the patient to get the corr ect results before surgery. To become a surgeon you have to have active listening, I think for someone to have active listening is the most important thing just because if you’re not paying attention to one thing a person says, that could mess up your whole surgical procedure. You have to have critical thinking, use logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weakness of solutions when it comes to problems. All of the reasons above explain everything I’m good at or at least want to become good at that’s why I want to become a surgeon. While researching all of the possible careers I could acquire I have come to realize that not only is  having a career so important to the society, but you also have to enjoy the career you choose. If you do not choose the career you are fond of you will most likely end up miserable having to go to work every single day. That is why I have chosen three careers, I have about every quality or hope to have that these careers need. I would love to become a psy chiatrist. Becoming a veterinarian would be important to me because I care so much for animals. Also, if I was to become a surgeon it would be a job I would enjoy just because I would be saving lives and helping the common wealth of people. Prohibition began on January 16, 1920 and went on until the early 1930’s. During the Great Depression whiskey could be prescribed from a medical doctor. It was meant to just be for medical purposes, and if not the use of alcohol was illegal. In October 1929 the stock market crashed. A lot of people lost a lot of money. Most people also lost their houses. Marriages were torn apart, because of the lack of money. During high school everyone should at least have a vague idea of the career path they chose to take. In my perspective of life, it is all about risk. If you are not taking risks and doing something out of the box, you are not having fun, you are just an average ordinary person. As Jane Goodall has always said â€Å"If you really wan t something, and really work hard, and take advantage of opportunities, and never give up, you will find a way. â€Å" I have lived off of that quote because there is always something that everyone wants in life, and if you do not take advantage of your opportunities how are you supposed to accomplish what you want? There is one certain career that I want and I know that I would enjoy and love doing. Growing up I have always had a strong love for animals and I have always wanted to travel to extraordinary places. I could not imagine life without animals; they make the world a better place. Not only do I love just domestic animals, I’ve always have been intrigued by exotic animals. Have you ever wondered how exotic species act in the habitat that you are not familiar with? I think it would be a magnificent job to be an exotic veterinarian traveling the world bringing animals back to health one by one. Since I plan to become an exotic veterinarian there are several of things I will need to accomplish and require before getting licensed. I must have tons of knowledge. For example, you must know biology, customer and personal service, medicine and dentistry, mathematics – arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics; chemistry, English language. Also  the skills that are required to become a veterinarian are as such; science, active listening, critical thinking, speaking, judgment and decision making, also reading comprehension. In my personal opinion everything should be basic knowledge. During my years of high school I should be taking all of the science classes that are available, I should also be taking tons of math courses and all should be hi gher level courses. Because I took higher level courses in high school, once it is my time to attend college I will have the basic knowledge of the classes that I am required to take in order to become an exotic veterinarian. It is required that you have a 4 year bachelor’s degree as well as your veterinarian doctorate degree. Exotic veterinary hospitals also offer residency programs for those interested in specializing in the discipline. Veterinarians must obtain state licensure to practice medicine on domestic, farm and exotic animals. That means that you must pass the Veterinary Licensing Exam in order to become a veterinarian. There are many job offerings to become an exotic veterinarian every year. There are tons of colleges that are recommended for this type of career or occupation. The University of Kentucky is known for what a great veterinarian program that they have. That would be a wonderful university to attend. There are many other universities that are just as g ood as Kentucky University; however that is the college that I want to apply to. Approximately 80 percent of admitted students in veterinary schools are female. Veterinarian came from the Latin word meaning â€Å"working animals†. In the life of an exotic veterinarian working with wildlife animals, every day is a surprise with a new adventure included within the day. Approximately 80 percent of veterinarians work in private clinical practice. Any ordinary veterinary hangs out in an office all day every day with the likely hood of the most craziest thing he/she would do in one day is deworm a dog. The types of countries that I would like to travel would be Africa, Australia, India, etc. I would like to have a life worth living with people recognizing who I am and what great things I have accomplished. The starting salary for a Specialist is US$ 150,000. I would be making tons of money as well as enjoying my job. After researching and finding more and more knowledge about an exotic veterinarian I have become much more aware of the career I would like to  further in. Not only do I have more knowledge but a better understanding of the classes, people, and things I might see and do in the near future. I wouldn’t want to change my career for anything; I have my mind set on becoming and exotic veterinary. I also am much more excited about different information I have come to realize about an exotic veterinary. There is not one normal day in the life of an exotic veterinarian, and that’s what I would want my life to be like. You’re not realistically living if you don’t have an exciting adventurous life, in my opinion.

The Mirage Hotel and Casino

The Mirage Hotel and Casino (The Hotel Industry) By Gregory D. Tucker The word â€Å"hotel† didn’t appear until the 18th century. It came from the French hotel, large house, and originated in the Latin roots hospitium or hospes. Hospitality, hostile and hotels are all related words. The difficulty of identifying early travelers as friends or foes probably accounts for the conflict in meaning Friendly travelers found security and accommodations through the hospitality of their hosts. As the numbers of travelers increased, personal courtesy gave way to commercial enterprise. The hotel was born carrying with it a culture of hospitality. The hotel industry grew and flourished through the centuries by adapting to the changing social, business, and economic environment that marked human progress. During the modern times, these stages have been labeled for easy reference. The 18th century was the agricultural age; the 19th century, the industrial age. The 20th century has been the age of service. The sale of services, such as medicine, banking, education and hotelkeeping, has outpaced the manufacture and distribution of goods. The 21st century has opened with that same service culture even as it launces what is likely to be the age of technology. The Mirage was built by developer Steve Wynn and designed by Joel Bergman. It opened in November 1989 and was the first resort that was built with the money of Wall Street through the use of junk bonds. It was built on the site, formerly occupied by the Castaways and previous to that, the Red Rooster Nite Club. The Mirage was the most expensive hotel-casino in history, with a construction cost of US $630 million. The hotel's distinctive gold windows get their color from actual gold dust used in the tinting process. Hotels employ a many people with a variety of skills.Hotels have plumbers, accountants, bartenders, cooks, grounds managers, telecommunications experts, and computer trouble shooters. Depending on the s ize of the hotel will determine how many different specialists are required to work there. Managing all of the different types of people requires a organizational structure. The general manager is the person responsible for everything that happens at the hotel. Because hotels never close and are open 24 hours a day, some hotels use a rotating management schedule to cover the night, weekend and holiday periods. The general manager supervises and controls all of the departments in the hotel. The Food and Beverage Manager works with the Front Office in close coordination. They deal with the production and service of food and beverage. Food production is headed by a Chef, or Executive Chef. Services range from in room service, restaurant, the bar, and banquet and convention services. Every department that services guests falls within the responsibility of the hotel manager. The hotel manager deals with every service except for Food and Beverage. The hotel manager reports to the General M anager. Some of the most important areas of the hotel manager’s responsibility are the uniformed services, the concierge, telephone, and other departments. Hotel manager oversees the Uniformed Services department. This has included traditional jobs such as baggage porters, transportation clerks, elevator operators, bellpersons and door attendants. In recent years however, this area of the hotel industry that is on decline. Several reasons include the fact that guests travel lighter todaythan before, suitcases have wheels, and fewer pieces of luggage means fewer trips from the car to the hotel room, meaning less demand for uniformed services. In addition, because of minimum wage laws, these non-essential services are being cut. The Concierge is another department that the Hotel Manager oversees. The concierge is position that is mandated by an organization called The International Union of Concierges, in Paris, France. In Canada, this organization is called Les Clefs d’or Canada. Members wear the Golden Keys as their symbol of professionalism. Before hotels started using electronic key cards the concierge was the person responsible for guarding the hotel’s keys. Today the role of the concierge includes many duties. The Front Office is an easily identifiable area of the lobby. Functionally it is the heart of the hotel. Through the front desk flows communications with every department of the hotel. The primary purpose of the hotel is to sell rooms. For large hotels room sales account for half of the hotel’s revenue. For smaller hotels, room sales account for almost all of the hotel’s revenue. Hotel guests relate with the front desk. They go to the front desk to have all of their concerns and needs met. It is the primary guest-service centre. Structure of the Front Office and Working Hours: The front office is located in the hotel lobby.Front-desk computers have greatly reduced the amount of space the front office occupies. This has allowed for new lobby designs. A well designed lobby functions like a town centre. Modern lobbies are ideal for networking, they offer small furniture that allows for privacy for cell-phone use, as well as intimacy for cocktail gatherings. Regardless, the lobby design must provide easy access to the front office. Modern front desk design allows for impressing the guest. Factors such lighting, form, materials, and architecture are used to enhance the guest’s experience. Some front desks are nudged into lobby corners while others are lobby’s focal point. Whichever design is used, the front desk needs to provide security to the employees and to the guests. Security is enhanced when the front office employees have an unobstructed view of the lobby, all entry doors, and elevators. Hotels never close, so structure is very important. Work schedules in hotels must provide around the clock staffing, especially at the front desk. There are three main shifts in most hotels, the D ay Shift, the Swing Shift, and the Graveyard Shift. Most employees work an eight hour shift, five days a week, with two days off per week. Most employees prefer the Day Shift, which runs from 7:30am to 3:30pm. It allows for the usual workweek. Bellpersons prefer to work the swing shift, which runs from 3:30pm to 11:30pm. During this shift is when arrivals and tips are the heaviest. The graveyard shift runs from 11:30pm to 7:30am. This shift has the least guest activity, but it is important because it is when the night audit is completed. Building structure is also very important. If a hotel isn’t feasible to the eyes it will be passed up.Hotels in North America have changed considerably in recent years. Typically, these changes have been seen since the 1950’s. Changes in room sizes, amenities, and bed sizes. Another interesting feature about building structure are the cultural differences found in room and floor numbering. The Mirage isn’t like any other hotel, b ut in the same light it is. The attractions, the famous Volcano, the rooms, the restaurants and the staff are all different from other hotels/casinos and resorts, but the structure of this modern hotel is almost identical to any other hotel.Besides its construction, it is also considered noteworthy because it had set a new standard for Vegas resorts, and is also considered the father of today’s Las Vegas. The Mirage was the first hotel casino to use security cameras full time. Prior to the Mirage’s arrival the city was experiencing a decline in tourism that began in the 70’s. The Mirage is an organization that visualized dealing with customers in terms of a cycle of service, a repeatable sequence of events in which various people try to meet the customer needs and expectations at each point. When a customer considers the services that they required complete, it begins anew when he or she decides to come back for more. Honor Killing in India Essay

An honor killing or honour killing (also called a customary killing) is the murder of a member of a family or social group by other members, due to the belief of the perpetrators (and potentially the wider community) that the victim has brought dishonour upon the family or community. Honour killings are directed mostly against women and girls. The perceived dishonor is normally the result of one of the following behaviors, or the suspicion of such behaviors: a. dressing in a manner unacceptable to the family or community, b. wanting to terminate or prevent an arranged marriage or desiring to marry by own choice, c. engaging in heterosexual sexual acts outside marriage, or even due to a non-sexual relationship perceived as inappropriate, and d. engaging in homosexual acts. Women and girls are killed at a much higher rate than men. Recently, there has been a spate of honor killings in the country and this has led the government to decide what laws should be put in place to stop this heinous crime. Also whether the Hindu Marriage Act should be reformed or not is being debated. So what is the definition of honour killing and what leads families to commit this heinous crime so that they can protect their family honour? Is this practice prevalent only in India or is it prevalent in other parts of the world also? What are the misconceptions regarding honour killing and what are the solutions to stop this crime from spreading? These are the questions that society find the answer†¦ In my opinion Honour killing is defined as a death that is awarded to a woman of the family for marrying against the parent’s wishes, having extramarital and premarital relationships, marrying within the same gotra or outside one’s caste or marrying a cousin from a different caste. Read more: Essay About India Crime Rate Honour killing is different from the dowry deaths that are also a very common practice in India as, in the case of dowry deaths, the perpetrators of that action claim that they have not been given enough material rewards for accepting the woman into the family. In that case there is a lot of harassment from the in-laws and more times than one, it has been noted that the wife commits suicide rather than being killed by the in-laws, though it has to be said that she has been mentally killed, if not physically. We have had a tradition of honour killing. This tradition was first viewed in its most horrible form during the Partition of the country in between the years 1947 and 1950 when many women were forcefully killed so  that family honour could be preserved. Now, there are various reasons why people or family members decide to kill the daughter in the name of preserving their family honour. The most obvious reason for this practice to continue in India, albeit, at a much faster and almost daily basis, is because of the fact that the caste system continues to be at its rigid best and also because people from the rural areas refuse to change their attitude to marriage. According to them, if any daughter dares to disobey her parents on the issue of marriage and decides to marry a man of her wishes but from another gotra or outside her caste, it would bring disrepute to the family honour and hence they decide to give the ultimate sentence, that is death, to the daughter. Now as has become the norm, the son-in-law is killed as well. Sociologists believe that the reason why honour killings continue to take place is because of the continued rigidity of the caste system. Hence the fear of losing their caste status through which they gain many benefits makes them commit this heinous crime. The other reason why honour killings are taking place is because the mentality of people has not changed and they just cannot accept that marriages can take place in the same gotra or outside one’s caste. The root of the cause for the increase in the number of honour killings is because the formal governance has not been able to reach the rural areas and as a result. Thus, this practices continues though it should have been removed by now. There are various misconceptions regarding the practice of honor killing. The first misconception about honor killing is that this is a practice that is limited to the rural areas. The truth is that it is spread over such a large geographical area that we cannot isolate honor killings to rural areas only, though one has to admit that majority of the killings take place in the rural areas. But it has also been seen recently that even the metropolitan cities like Delhi and Tamil Nadu are not safe from this crime because 5 honor killings were r eported from Delhi and in Tamil Nadu; a daughter and son in law were killed due to marriage into the same gotra. So it can be seen clearly that honor killing is not isolated to rural areas but also to urban areas and as already pointed out, it has a very wide geographical spread. The second misconception regarding honor killing is that it has religious roots. Even if a woman commits adultery, there have to be four male witnesses with good behavior and reputation to validate the charge. Furthermore only the State can carry out judicial  punishments, but never an individual vigilante. So, we can clearly see that there is no religious backing or religious roots for this heinous crime. What can we do to prevent such a thing from happening? Firstly, the mentality of the people has to change. And when we say that the mentality has to change, we mean to say that parents should accept their children’s wishes regarding marriage as it is they who have to lead a life with their life partners and if they are not satisfied with their life partner then they will lead a horrible married life which might even end in suicide. Secondly, we need to have stricter laws to tackle these kinds of killings as this is a crime which cannot be pardoned because. Humans do not have the right to write down death sentences of innocent fellow humans. More Choice :: Honour killing can be defined as the homicide of the member of a family or social group by other members due to the belief of the perpetrators that the victim has brought dishonour upon the family or community. In most of the cases, honour killings are mostly directed against the women especially in the South Asian and Middle Eastern Islamic cultures. Sadly, this culture is prevalent in some parts of the Indian society too. Mainly the method of honor killing is adopted when a girl goes against the wishes of her family and marries a guy who does not belong to her own community. In some of these cases, both the boy and the girl are killed either secretly by the family members and even openly claiming that the respective boy or girl have bought dishonour and disrespect to the family and to the society or community as a whole. Each and every individual has the right to live his or her own life according to their own wishes. After attaining the age of 18 and 21 by the girl and the boy respectively, the family has no right to force them into marriage or any other act if they are unwilling to do so. If an individual be it a boy or a girl feels that he or she wants to marry according to their wishes, their parents should accept the wishes. In fact, parents only desire to see their children happy and if the children are happy, the parents should let them do what they desire. But for a number of families, their status and position in the society is so much more important than their kids that they do not mind killing them or sacrificing them just to maintain their desired status. Only one question comes into the mind of all the  people- Is the society more important than your children? When asked all will say that their children are more important. But in some of the cases the reality is totally different. These people who kill their children for the breach of so called code of conduct of their societies are actually only concerned about their status and position in the society. Such people can be termed as criminals who are far more dangerous than the terrorists. Terrorists kill people who are unknown to them. But these people who support honour killing and are a part of it are heartless because only a heartless individual can kill someone they love and that too for a baseless reason. The government of India has formulated laws against honour killing but still this inhuman practice exists. In my opinion people involved in honour killing should also be treated as criminals and should be punished as severely as possible. Even capital punishment should be offered to these individuals so that they realize that how painful death was to the person they killed. More choices :: Alarmed by the rise of honour killings,Government is planning to bring a bill in the Monsoon Session of Parliament next month to provide for deterrent punishment for ‘honour’ killings. â€Å"We have already finalised a draft and the bill should come in the next session,† Law Minister M Veerappa Moily told . He said that the bill envisages amendments to several related acts, including the Evidence Act and the onus would be on the accused to prove their innocence. His comments came a day after the Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to centre and states government to file reports on the murders of young couples and asked them how they can stop such killings and what the government and the states have done in this regard. Supreme court on Honour killing The Supreme Court issued notices to the Centre and nine States on a PIL seeking directions to the Union government to make law to protect young couples from Honour killings. A vacation bench comprising Justices R M Lodha and A K Patnaik issued notices on a petition filed by an NGO Shaktivahini alleging that young couples who dare to defy their families or Khap Panchayat in the matter of marriage are under constant threat from them. It noted the sudden rise in the incidents of honour killing at the instance of Khap Panchayats. Among the states which have been directed to respond to the PIL are Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. The apex court had earlier refused to entertain a petition seeking directions to the government to amend Hindu Marriage Act to declare same gotra marriage as illegal. Kiran Bedi on honour killing Veteran police administrator Kiran Bedi said there can be no excuse to sanction murder, whatever the cause, and active policing and serious penal sanctions is the only way to check this dishonourable practice. Besides, any law against honour killing will be effective only when there is a will on the part of the society itself. The suspected honour killing of married couple Kuldeep Singh (26) and Monica (24) – allegedly by Monica’s brother Ankit Nagar and his friend Mandeep Nagar – took a bloody turn early when the body of another woman, Shobha, was found in a car near the couple’s rented house in Ashok Vihar close to the local police station. Shobha was Mandeep’s sister.Whereas Shobha’s uncle supports the killing by saying â€Å"This killing will teach a lesson to the society.† Honour killing in India The latest victims of what caste councils (khap panchayats) call a justified act to protect family’s ‘maryada’ (honour). This councils are found in northern India, particularly in Haryana, Punjab, western Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, Rajasthan. Every month one honour killing takes place in Punjab. As per data complied for the first time by the Crime wing of the Punjab Police, during the past  two-and-a-half years — from 2008 till date — 34 honour killings have taken place in the state: 10 in 2008, 20 in 2009, four so far in 2010. Of the total 34 cases, 16 were reported from Tarn Taran district. Perhaps one of the most backward areas in Punjab in terms of literacy, Tarn Taran has witnessed the highest number of honour killings in the state. Last month, a newly wed couple was attacked, the girl was killed and the boy grievously injured. The parents of the girl were the main suspects in the case.

Response - Assignment Example â€Å"Cameron (†¦.) defines several different kinds of research based on relationships between researchers and those they are researching, including ETHICAL RESEARCH, ADVOCACY RESEARCH, and EMPOWERING RESEARCH.† (Wolfram et al 1119). The significance of this sentence lies in the fact that it introduces the reader to modes of research in social linguistics. It further explains the relevance of these types of research to both researchers and the communities being researched on. b) Several examples can be used in applying this principle. One is through video documentaries, whereby a certain community is given a live recording. The other one is museum exhibits where significant certain data are publicized. 6) Another principle of sociolinguistic engagement is the intrinsic connection between language differences and socio historical, sociocultural, and regional traditions (p. 1113). The above quotation means that language differences are influenced by certain issues in which a community has in common. This includes historical, cultural and regional traditions shared amongst the individuals. For example, I have realized that immigrants from a certain community tend to speak a variation of vernacular from the members of the same community born or raised up in the US. 7. As a group of undergraduate students, the following event can be organized to give something back to a community researched on. The project would involve the Tangier community in a tiny island in Virginia. The event would be about a unique cultural practice which would attract tourist and interest groups. The goal of the event would be to create awareness of the community and their unique dialect. The event will be provided by linguistics, community developers and other non-political interest groups. It will focus on benefitting the Tangier community. This proposal is an example of a valid and reliable

Kickstarter Analysis Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Kickstarter Analysis - Assignment Example The only requirement and the prerequisite for your business idea to be picked is for it to be something out of the world and unique. If you can make your project sound appealing, there’s a bright chance an investor would pick your project up and back it with finance (Kickstarter website, 2013). Kickstarter launched in 2009 and since then have been able to have funding done for over 35,000 projects. The one figure that would be the biggest encouraging factor for aspiring entrepreneurs is that over $500million have been promised to projects through this platform. All one needs to do is create an independent profile of your business idea on Kickstarter. This is like the face of your project and hence it needs to be absolutely top notch in order to for to appeal to a potential investor. The more creativity it oozes, the higher will be its chances of being picked up by a financer. Once the page is complete, creators make the page available to the community and hope it attracts funds (Levy, 2010). Kickstarter makes money every time a funding deal is brokered for a project on the website. They charge a 5% fee of the total fund that is won by a project. That is not only very reasonable but also justified considering they make the business idea available to a vast number. They heavily rely on their website, the community they have developed and word of mouth for marketing and communication of their services. They have achieved high success since their inception so the website has been thriving on the positive word of mouth and referrals they receive. Not only do aspiring entrepreneurs trust them, the investor community also believes they will find good ideas on the website (Villano, 2010). The webpage has heavy traffic and has more than 3million registered users. The funding rate of projects is also impressive with as many as 44% of the projects successfully landing interested investors. This shows the traffic not only

This research survey will be conducted to bring a solution to the issue of the decreasing number of tourists who are cruising to Victoria, BC. According to Victoria News, there was a decrease in number of visitors from 481,733 passengers in 2013, to 465,065 in 2014 (Stewart,  2014). For this reason, the research will study the cruise ship industry and try to come up with the best ways to increase the number of visitors and implement a marketing strategy that would help the Victoria BC to regain and enlarge its customer base. The research will help to correct the problem of reduced numbers of tourists by surveying the real reasons behind the decline. In this way, the cruise ship companies will be able to correct their marketing efforts and planning immediately. The recommended methodology to conduct an effective survey is to have one-on-one Skype interviews with the 30 to 40 customers across European and American regions. Skype is a web conferencing tool that enables individuals to participate in a one-on-one interview; it facilitates an instant audio-video communication regardless of geographical location (Bembenutty, 2014). Good (Morning or afternoon), my name is Saud Bin Aqeel from Victoria Tourism. Your recent travel Agent gave us your contact information. Thank you for taking this time to participate

Contemporary ethical challenges and Leadership Essay

Contemporary ethical challenges and Leadership - Essay Example Things which people perceived as wrong in the past are now viewed as tolerable and acceptable. This change in the way people think has brought about numerous challenges which leaders have to face. Moral behaviour was initially judged on the basis of religious teachings. Irrespective of which religion an individual belonged to, the human life was focused on the religious teachings. However with the passage of time, the human focus has shifted from religion. With secular societies and nations being on the rise, religion is not viewed as the fundamental basis of how one should act. Consequently, the error theory and the meta-ethics have developed over time. In the present times, age old principles are not used as the basis of governing a situation. Be it an issue in economy or a problem faced in the business, people consider the present situation and weigh their pros and cons before terming an action as either ethical or unethical. It is believed that times have changed so immensely, th at the age old principles do not apply any longer to the issues faced by the people today (Mackie, 110). In a world, where people often do not abide by the rules of religion, it is very important for national leaders to be ethical. Similarly it is very important for business leaders and the executive managers to be ethical. Businesses are run on the basis of trust and ethics. An increasing number of business schools now teach philosophy and ethics as a part of their curriculum so as to avoid their graduates from following prey to scandals and breach of ethics in the real world (Fulmer, 308). The ethics of leadership have been analyzed time and again using the disciplines of science and humanities. While scientific scholars aim at providing people with descriptions and explanations, the humanities scholars deliver an understanding of the topic (Ciulla, 304). Every leader has to face his personal set of ethical challenges. These challenges may differ from one leader to another. In the case of national leaders, there are situations where their moral luck is to be blamed. Certain leaders are not unethical, but the situations that they have to face might lead them to make certain decisions which may look immoral. The decisions which leaders have to make on a daily basis are very sensitive and risky. At times they do not have complete information or may lack the time to gather the required information. When it comes to national decisions, leaders may often have to opt for a strategy which will cause the least amount of damage, but will cause damage nonetheless. Kant’s argument holds true in these situations. The argument was that since humans cannot guarantee the results of their actions, the judgments should be based on the right principles which a certain individual follows and not on the outcome (Ciulla, 309). The business scenario today is changing almost too rapidly. In such situations leaders have to be constantly on their toes, in order to keep themsel ves updated and be a step ahead of their competitors. Every business leader has numerous stakeholders to think about when making a decision. Every single decision made by the CEO of a company affects either the employees, vendors, consumers and shareholders or in certain cases all of them. Numerous companies today operate globally. They are not owned by a single person or family, but are publically owned companies. Multinationals like Unilever and Johnson & Johnson are

Health care career that may experience a lot of turnover and has Essay

Health care career that may experience a lot of turnover and has difficutly retaining people - Essay Example On further investigation it was found that the physicians offices saw the longest tenure of 1.57 years compared to only 0.97 years in the nursing care facilities. Difficulty faced by nurses in the job was the major reason given by them. When nurses were asked about the issues they face in their jobs, they gave several reasons but some of the prominent ones were lack of advancement opportunities, work overload, poor salary, too few staff, and poor organizational culture. Lack of training, poor fit with boss, and not enough access to technology were also some of the other reasons mentioned by them. Work load and too few staff are the issues that are greatly related and can be addressed by recruiting adequate staff, as a long term solution, so that nurses do not have to borne undue pressures that eventually cause burn out and force them to leave the organization. Recruiting sufficient nurses would automatically lessen the workload on each nurse to a reasonable level improving working environment substantially. Regarding the other issues raised by the nurses, the organization needs to have an effective retention policy at place. Motivation and the recognition are the two primary pillars of any retention policy. McConnell (2010) argues that an effective reward system must be in place so that nurses feel motivated. Even suitable incentive schemes must be launched to recognize the good job done by them. From the behavioral view point, nurses must be rewarded suitably when the patients appreciate and give them good feedback at the time of their discharge. Reward system and recognition cannot replace the generous pay scale necessary to retain the good and efficient nurse; nevertheless, they work like a great motivator for the nurses. It is necessary that the supervisor or manager looks at the issue in its entirety so as to eliminate the root causes that are behind high turnover of the

Statement of Educational Philosophy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Statement of Educational Philosophy - Essay Example Even if the best quality seed is sown in bad soil and neglected, it withers away. Edward Joyner of Yale University School said that ‘The development of a tree depends on where it is planted†. The same seed, planted in rich soil, if watered and fertilized and taken care of, sprouts and produced rich and luscious fruit. It is in this way that education of a child is to be perceived. It was John Dewey who compared the child to a plant and the teacher to a gardener. This is especially true of children in the lower school grade. They are delicate in mind and body, extremely sensitive, like soft clay that would take any given shape. The shape that they take in this age is set for their lifetime. There is a need to handle them with gentleness and care. This is not the task of the teacher alone. The entire school atmosphere, the efforts of the team ranging from teachers to directors of the institution, the students and their parents, should all be directed towards the single goal of education. The term ‘education’ here is to be taken in its broadest sense, implying not just providing instruction and information, but the development of social, physical, emotional, intellectual, moral and spiritual aspects, and extending in these times to the ‘global’ aspect. All these aspects are wide and varied, and naturally, cannot be fulfilled in the home setting, among parents and a handful of relatives. The school then, is to be like an expanded home, where experts in every field are appointed to make up for what parents alone cannot do. This does not eliminate the role of parents. Teachers, parents and society should all work together. At the same time, children are the national wealth, future human resource of their country. Hence the government also has an equally important role to play in the system of education. It is up to the lower school director to co-ordinate the efforts of all these elements and harness them for the benefit of stude nts. Another side of the picture is that all students come from different socio-economic backgrounds (almost 7 to 8 strata exist ranging from the very poor to the extremely rich). They have individual differences, different learning capacities, different aims, motivations, aptitudes and inclinations. Some also have physical disabilities. It is difficult but essential to treat them as equal, at the same time, catering to their individual needs. A class should be conducted by two teachers at a time. While one explains, the other can assist with the teaching aids and ppt etc. Later, one of them should conduct separate remedial classes for the weaker students. Simultaneously, the other teacher should go deeper into the same topic with the academically brighter students. In this way, the needs of both groups can be fulfilled. Marva Collins said, that the good teacher makes te poor students good and the good students superior. The school provides a wider and more varied social environment compared to a family. Group projects, team games, co-operative learning methods must be introduced. Socialization of children can be taken care of and maladjustment in future can be prevented. This is extremely important considering the fast and easy means of communication. One or two handicapped children must be placed in each class at least for a couple of sessions. This kind of
